Coffee Dates: Sam Goodman and How We Fix The Climate Crisis

There has been a lot of doom and gloom when it comes to the climate, especially over the last few months, with scenes of wildfires and devasting floods occurring in the world.

On top of reports after reports saying that humanity is at a critical stage regarding the climate, there is a lack of optimism within the discourse.

On this coffee date, Hamish Hallett was joined by Sam Goodman, author of Beyond Carbon Neutral: How We Fix the Climate Crisis, to speak about how we can fix this issue and how to do it. The conversation touched on many matters like switching to renewables, the political change needed and what we the people can do.

46: The Uyghur Tribunal and Why It Is Important

In a pretty different and challenging episode, Hamish Hallett spoke about his experiences at the Uyghur Tribunal that he attended on 10th September. He went into depth about what the tribunal is, what it aims to do, and why we need to be aware of this tribunal. This episode is not an easy listen or an episode to do but an episode that needs to be published and talked about by the rest of the world.

Coffee Dates: Jason Szeftel and How Genuine Is China’s Interest In Afghanistan

As we should all know by now, Afghanistan has become ravaged in the headlines, and many are unsure what will happen with the Taliban establishing control in the country.

Some analysts say that China may play a role in what will happen next with Afghanistan.

But the question is, how genuine is China’s interest in Afghanistan?

On this coffee date, Hamish Hallett was joined by Jason Szeftel, who has a lot of knowledge on how China operates with his blog and podcast called China Unravelled. They spoke about whether China is interested in Afghanistan or it just being newspaper gossip. Not just that, but they looked into if there are genuine China-Taliban links and if the west should be concerned by China’s supposed interest in the country. Hamish and Jason also covered other areas of international relations and how states act in a conversation that has many moving parts and should spike the interest for those interested in this situation and international relations as a whole.

45: Texas Abortion Bill, Twitch Boycott, Benyamin Ahmed‘s Weird Whales and REACT Device.

Texas passes an abortion law that stops people from having an abortion after six weeks, causing mass discussion in the United States and worldwide. A day boycott for Twitch illustrates yet again how online platforms are getting it wrong when trying to combat online hate. Meanwhile, Benyamin Ahmed is the latest success story for NFTs, maybe pointing towards an NFT future and Loughborough student/graduate Joseph Bentley creates a device to help with stab wounds. In other news, the Taliban is slowly forming a government in Afghanistan, with Dominic Raab saying that the UK must engage with them in this “new reality”, as Scotland flirts with the idea of a four-day week and six months after Sarah Everard’s death, a survey finds that nearly half of women feel unsafe on the streets.

44: UK Food Shortages, Civil Servant Links With LGB Alliance, Algeria-Morocco Hostilities and Bladeless Turbines

The United Kingdom experiences mass food shortages and could see Christmas be affected for the second year running. The Demographica Network’s journalism investigation finds civil servant links with the founder of LGB Alliance. Meanwhile, Algeria-Morocco relations worsen, and bladeless wind turbines could answer the critics of wind power.

In other news, the situation in Afghanistan worsens after the suicide bombing in Kabul Airport, anti-lockdown protests rage in Australia and New Zealand after lockdown is put in place. All of this while Extinction Rebellion starts its takeover in London for 14 days and OnlyFans reverses its decision to ban sexually explicit photos and videos.

43: How The International Community Got It Wrong With Afghanistan, Concerns Over Incels, 3D Printed Weapons and Vibrating Shoes

The situation in Afghanistan has gone from bad to worse, and the international community is to blame. Incels are of concern after the Plymouth attack, while 3D printed weapons pose new concerns over 3D printing. Meanwhile, there is optimism for the visually impaired over vibrating shoes.

Coffee Dates: Derek Gutierrez and What is Happening in Cuba?

Protests in Cuba started at the beginning of July, and it is an ever-changing situation with many nuances and many reasons why this has all occurred.

And so, to unpack all of this, I had back onto the podcast Derek Gutierrez, from America’s Moderate Voice.

For this coffee date, we spoke about our reactions to what has happened, outlining the possible reasons behind the current scenes in Cuba and what Joe Biden might do regarding this issue. Lots of nuances and layers to this situation as we both tried as much as we could to address what is going on.

Coffee Dates: Samantha M and The Future of Work Post-Covid-19

The work has been impacted a lot in recent years, and it has taken an even bigger turn because of the pandemic and how we have switched to remote work.

For this coffee date, Samantha M, who is an entrepreneur and founder of Lotus Design & Development, joined me on A Spoonful of News. She runs a business that aims to help small businesses grow within social media and the online space through various services, and we joined me to talk about what the future may hold for employers and employees. We spoke in-depth about many topics, including boundaries being blurred within this time of remote work, how we see the democratisation of entrepreneurship, and discussing the implications around automation and if we should fear it.

This is a great conversation with lots of moving parts and one that those within the working world should listen to and think about how they will be impacted when moving into this “new normal”.

42: Turkey-Greece Wildfires, Taliban-Afganistan, Māori Voting and Cyberflashing

The latest wildfires in Turkey and Greece are signs that we could be seeing the abolition of the earth and humankind. The Taliban has gained control of Afghanistan as the security situation in this country starts to worsen. Meanwhile, there are efforts to make it easier for Māori people to switch voting rolls, and cyberflashing could become a crime. In other news, the Olympics comes to a close, the UK increases its motivation to get people vaccinated, and anti-Semitism is rising, according to a new report.

41: Simone Biles, RNLI, China’s Extraterritorial Reach On Yidiresi Aishan and Men’s Contraception

Simone Biles withdrawal from the Olympics has a significant impact on sport and society regarding health, success and quitting. The Royal National Lifeboat Institute (RNLI) saves lives in the channel, but some are not too happy about this. Meanwhile, China uses its extraterritorial reach on Uighur activist Yidiresi Aishan, and there is a breakthrough in men’s contraception.
